Systems Art & Interactivity (ART 511.2)

This course explores cybernetic and systems-based approaches to art-making and contextualization of information systems as art. Approximately 18 students in a combination seminar/studio course. Discussions on concepts such as complexity and emergence were introduced and their meaning and relevancy within an arts context explored, both via readings and discussions as well as practical systems art projects. The final project consisted of a cybernetic art system that explored the themes and concepts of the course and possibly utilized an alternative substrate for a cybernetic control system (e.g. crystals, slime mold, etc).

Conceptual Strategies (ART 410)

This course is an introduction to new practices in digital media and an exploration of strategies for generating ideas and producing new work. Approximately 12 students in a combination seminar/studio course. The course draws from numerous references such as Dada, Fluxus, Conceptual Art, Process Art and Systems Art. The final project consisted of a proposal for an "improbable monument" intended for an art funding body or grant agency.

Sound Design (IAT 380)

This course develops a discursive framework and introduces media practices from many cultural settings. Provides an overview of relevant historical, theoretical and critical approaches relevant to "new media" in the context of globalization. Coordinated and taught 3 lab sections of approximately 25 students each. Primarily focused on leading discussions of relevant readings and assisting students with project work.
Interactive Arts (IAT 222)

Survey course in interactive and "new media" art. Co-developed curriculum, coordinated and taught 3 lab sections of approximately 25 students each. Guided students in explorations of their creative thinking via exercises intended to develop strategies for generating ideas within an arts context. Practical exercises, such as as developing an artist statement and presenting the work of interactive artists were also assigned. The final project consisted of an interactive art proposal and presentation intended for an art funding body or grant agency.

An introduction to historical, aesthetic, theoretical and practical issues in digital video production. Coordinated and taught three lab sections of approximately 25 students each on various tools and topics such as Final Cut Pro video editing, and Adobe After Effects compositing.

Provides students with the opportunity to experiment with designing in various non-normative frameworks provided by Cultural Studies, Critical Theory and Phenomenology. Primarily provided students with technical assistance on projects and led workshops on specific topics (e.g. electronics, sensors, etc).
